Aircraft
Boeing 727-46 with tail number HK-2422X (factory number 18876, serial 217) was launched by The Boeing Company in 1965 and made its first flight on December 30 . Its three turbojet engines were Pratt & Whitney JT8D-7A models and developed a thrust of 12,600 pounds. The first owner of the aircraft was Japan Airlines , which received it on January 7, 1966 and operated under tail number JA8309. On November 16, 1972, the airliner was leased by Korean Air , while it was also re-registered and received a new tail number HL7309. On November 9, 1980, Korean Air bought it and sold it to Sociedad Aeronáutica de Medellín (SAM) , where the aircraft number was assigned HK-2422 (HK-2422X) [1] [2] .
Holocaust
The plane operated flight 507 along the route Panama - Medellin - Bogota . At 14:18, he flew out of the Panamanian airport Tocumen and after climbing climbed to level 160 (16 thousand feet or 4.88 kilometers). On board were 7 crew members and 125 passengers, including a group of dentists on their way to the conference [1] [3] .
There was a thunderstorm in Medellin, and his beacon was previously attacked by terrorists and as a result did not work. On the way to Medellin, the crew contacted the dispatcher of the Medellin airport of Cordoba and reported on the flight of Abehorral . Unable to determine the position of the aircraft on the radar, the dispatcher gave permission to decrease to a height of 120 (12 thousand feet or 3.66 kilometers). Soon, communication with the crew ceased. After repeated attempts to contact the pilots, the controllers declared a state of emergency [1] [3] .
Due to the failure of the beacon, the pilots actually incorrectly determined their location and have not yet reached Abehoral. Declining in difficult weather conditions, the Boeing flew over Santa Barbara and crashed into Mount Paramo Frontino 25 miles (40 kilometers) from Medellin Airport at 15:04 at 12,300 feet (3,749 meters). All 132 people on board died. For 2013, this is the third most deadly plane crash in Colombia [1] [3] .
