He lost his parents in childhood and was raised by relatives in Berlin. His debut on stage, which became successful, took place in 1724 in Hanover. In 1730 he joined the troupe of Carolina Neuber . In 1739-1750 he was the director of his own drama troupe, which played in many cities in Germany (Luneburg, Leipzig, Hamburg, Breslau, Berlin, Braunschweig), and in 1750-1756 he was the director of the court theater in Schwerin with Christian Ludwig , who founded in 1753 in this city a theater academy. In 1756, when Frederick Mecklenburgsky came to power, he left Schwerin and again became an actor, playing mainly in Hamburg. Already in 1757, however, he decided to resign from the stage and returned to Schwerin, where he lived until the end of his life.
He was a well-known performer of comic roles, but mainly gained fame as the director of the theater, who did a lot for theatrical work and contributed to the development of such directions as comic opera and musical comedy.
