Biography
In 20 years, Ivan Molina reached the final of the international tennis tournament in Guilford (United Kingdom). Since 1970, the young player has constantly been a member of the Colombian national team in the Davis Cup , already in the first season playing an important role in its qualification to the finals of the South American tournament zone. In 1972 in Guayaquil, he won the amateur championship of South America in singles, but later his main successes were associated with the game in pairs, where his compatriot Jayro Velasco became his main partner. From 1973 to 1979, Molina made his way into the finals of the Grand Prix doubles eight times, five times with Velasco.
1974 was the most successful in Molina’s career. This year, he won the career-only professional Grand Prix tournament in the men's doubles in the Austrian Open ), and in the mixed doubles, along with Martina Navratilova, won the French Open . This achievement so far failed to repeat any Colombian tennis player. Another achievement of Molina this year was the sensational victory of the Colombian team in the Davis Cup match in Bogota over the USA team . Molina won both his singles matches - Eric van Dillen on the first day of the match and Harold Solomon on the last, and the Colombian team won 4-1 in the singles (the other two wins in the singles with the same rivals won Molina’s partner in pair competitions Jairo Velasco) [6] . In 1977, Molina for the second time in his career reached the final of the French Open, where this time his partner was Florence Mihai Romanian, but there they were stopped by an American couple, Mary Carillo - John Macinroy . Twice in his career, Moline played in the finals of the Grand Prix single-player tournaments (both times in 1975 , but could not win the title. Nevertheless, in the ATP rating he rose to 40th place (highest in the history of Colombian men's tennis [4] ), and prior to the appearance of the rating, according to the memoirs of contemporaries, it was quoted higher [7] . He had victories over Rod Laver , Roy Emerson , Manuel Orantes , Nicola Pilich and Arthur Ash . Leiver and Esch Molina managed to beat in one tournament - Canadian Open 1973 where he reached the semi-finals.
The last matches for the national team of Colombia, Ivan Molina held in 1979. In total, he won 22 victories (15 in singles) and 24 losses (14 in singles). He ended his individual playing career the following year, spending his farewell matches in his homeland, in Bogota.
Since 1993, Ivan Molina is an employee of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) . Its functions include the popularization of tennis, its development in countries where this game is less common, and support for young talents [7] . Molina lives in Florida with his wife and two daughters [4] .
