L'Enfant Plaza is the Washington Metro (WMATA) underground transfer station on the Blue , Orange , Yellow , Green and Silver [1] lines. It is represented by three platforms: 2 lateral at the upper level, used by the Yellow and Green lines, and 1 island at the lower level, used by the Blue, Orange and Silver lines. The station is served by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority . The station is located in the Southwestern quadrant of Washington with exits: in the L'Enfant shopping center, Plaza at the intersection of 9th Street and Di Street, on Di Street between 6th and 7th Street, at the intersection of Maryland Avenue and 7 th streets. Nearby are L'Enfant Plaza, National Alley , Smithsonian University Museums, Federal Aviation Administration , Postal Service . Passenger traffic - 6.524 million (for 2011) [2] .

The station was opened for service by the Washington Metro on July 1, 1977 , for the Virgin Railway Express on June 22, 1992 .
The opening of the metro station was combined with the completion of the 19.0 km railway line connecting the National Airport and the RFK Stadium and the opening of another 15 stations [3] [4] . The orange line has served the station since the opening on November 20, 1978 [5] , the Yellow line - April 30, 1983 [6] , the Green line - May 11, 1991 [7] . The opening of the Silver Line is scheduled for 2013 [8] .

The Virgin Express Railway Station (VRE) was opened in 1992, serviced by the Manassas line from June 22 and the Fredericksburg line from July 20. It is located directly next to Virginia Avenue subway station between 6th and 7th Streets. The station is represented by 1 side platform.
