Colombia is divided into 32 departments . They, in turn, are divided into municipalities , some of which fall under the category of district . In addition, there are so-called provinces , under this word such similar entities as provinces, regions, regions and subregions are combined . Most often, they are under the authority of department administrations and have a historical rather than legal status. Most departments in Colombia contain such provinces, but there are also no subdivisions: Amasonas , Arauca , Kaketa , Casanare , Choco , Guainia , Guaviar , Putumayo , San Andres y Providencia , Vaupes and Vichada .
