Biography

Gleb Kelbas was born on December 31, 1909 in the village of Stena (now the Tomashpol district of the Vinnitsa region of Ukraine ). He graduated from eight classes of school. In 1931, Kelbas was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1937 he graduated from the Odessa Infantry School. Since June 1941 - on the fronts of World War II. By April 1945, Lt. Col. Gleb Kelbas commanded the 696th Rifle Regiment of the 383rd Rifle Division of the 33rd Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . Distinguished himself during the Berlin operation [1] .

On April 16, 1945, the Kelbas regiment successfully broke through powerful German defense south of Frankfurt an der Oder and developed an offensive on Berlin . On April 23, the regiment crossed the Oder - Spree canal , and on April 24th, across the Spree river north of the city of Beskov . In battle, Kelbas was injured, but continued to lead the actions of his regiment [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 31, 1945, for “skillful command of the regiment and shown courage and heroism”, Lt. Col. Gleb Kelbas was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the awarding of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal number 8622 [1] .

In 1946, with the rank of Colonel Kelbas, he was sacked. He lived and worked in Kiev . He died on July 8, 1968, was buried at the Baikov cemetery in Kiev [1] .

He was also awarded two orders of the Red Banner , orders of Suvorov 3rd degree, Alexander Nevsky , World War 1 and 2 degrees, a number of medals [1] .
