Vladimir Alexandrovich Kovalchuk (b. 1951) - Soviet, Canadian, Ukrainian and Russian artist, stage designer, painter and teacher.

Biography
Vladimir Kovalchuk was born in the family of a veteran of the Great Patriotic War , a retired officer Alexander Kovalchuk (1920-2005). 8 years after the birth of a son, the family moved to Lutsk . Here, Vladimir studied for 5 years at an art school, and at 15 entered the Dnepropetrovsk art school. He graduated from the painting class in 1970. In 1974 he entered the Latvian Academy of Arts , where he received the title of master in painting and scenography .
After completing the academy, he began his career as an artist and set designer. From 1981 to 1988 - set designer at the Riga Youth Theater . Over the years, he created scenography for the plays “ Mowgli ” by Rudyard Kipling , “ Creating a Miracle ” by William Gibson , “The Invention of the Waltz” by Vladimir Nabokov , “Democracy” by Joseph Brodsky and others.
Since 1986, he began a creative union with the director Anatoly Vasiliev : “Variations of the Dragee Fairy” by Andrey Kuternitsky (1987, Riga, Youth Theater). 1988-1990 he worked in the theater " School of Dramatic Art " ("Fiorenza" by Thomas Mann , 1990, dir. A. Vasiliev).
In 1990 he immigrated to Canada , where he lived and worked for 10 years. During his stay in Canada, he designed about 20 performances, mainly in collaboration with the director Grigory Gladi . At the invitation of Anatoly Vasiliev, he returned to Russia and worked until 2004 at the School of Dramatic Art Theater. In collaboration with Vasiliev, he created several projects, among them: Amphitrion ( Comedy Frances , Paris , 2002), MedeaMaterial (School of Dramatic Art, Moscow , 2001) and others.
2004-2006 he worked as the chief artist of the Taganka Theater , where, together with Yuri Lyubimov, he released two performances, Souffle and Antigone. At the same time, he actively participated in scenography and painting exhibitions.
He released about 200 performances in various theaters in Canada, USA , Italy , France , Belgium , Japan , and Russia . The artist’s collections are kept in many museums and galleries in the world, in particular in the Theater Museum. A. Bakhrushin , the art museum of Western Ukraine ( Lutsk ), the Riga art museum , and are also present in private collections in Canada, USA, Germany, France, Russia, Latvia , Ukraine and other countries.
