World Marrow Donor Search Engine

Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW) is an organization based in Leiden , the Netherlands , which coordinates the collection of the HLA phenotype and other relevant data from volunteers wishing to donate hematopoietic bone marrow cells or peripheral hematopoietic stem cells.

As of June 2012, the system includes 66 hematopoietic cell donor registers from 48 countries, and 47 peripheral hematopoietic stem cell banks from 31 countries. With all of these registries taken together, the database includes over 21,000,000 potential bone marrow donors and 550,000 units of peripheral hematopoietic stem cells, making it the world's largest database. The search system was founded in 1988 in Leiden (Netherlands). The BMDW Editorial Board consists of one representative from each donor or cord blood stem cell bank that participates in the BMDW registry, and meets twice a year to discuss achievements and necessary improvements. BMDW is a service provided and managed by the Europdonor Foundation.

Mission

BMDW is a voluntary association of bone marrow stem cell donor registries and peripheral hematopoietic stem cell banks, which aims to provide centralized information on HLA phenotypes and other relevant stem cell data from donors and peripheral hematopoietic stem cells. BMDW aims to make this information easily accessible to doctors and patients who need transplantation.

Main objectives

The initial goal is to collect the HLA phenotypes of volunteers who want to become donors , as well as coordinate the distribution of this information throughout the world.

The following initiatives were added later:

  • Maximize the chances of finding a stem cell donor or peripheral hematopoietic stem cell, providing access to all donors available in the world.
  • Minimize the effort required to search for donor stem cells: only registries of potential stem cells or peripheral hematopoietic stem cells will need to be contacted.
  • Provide an assessment of the chances of finding a donor for patients in need.
  • Provide advanced donor search programs for partially compatible stem cells or peripheral hematopoietic stem cells.
  • Facilitation of consultation and search via the Internet.
  • Facilitating family search strategies.
  • Provide relevant information for the benefit of the patient.
  • Provide statistics on the increase in various registries, the number of DNA-typed donors, etc.
