Biography

Toncho Tonchev was born on December 1, 1972 in the city of Sliven . He achieved his first serious success in the ring in 1988, when he won silver medals at the international youth tournament in Tampere and at the junior championship in Santa Teresa. A year later, he participated in the World Junior Championships, and a year later he made his way to the main national team and went to the adult European Championships in Gothenburg, from where he brought a bronze medal, losing to the Soviet boxer Ayrat Khamatov in the semifinals . In the same season he visited the world championship in Sydney, but could not get into the number of winners. Thanks to successful performances at the preliminaries, he gained the right to defend the country's honor at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , reached the quarter-finals stage, where he scored 7:16 to American Oscar de la Hoye , who eventually became the Olympic champion.

In 1993, at the European Championships in Bursa, Tonchev stopped fighting for medals after the second match in the tournament. Then he participated in several minor tournaments, won a bronze medal at the World Cup in Bangkok, and won bronze at the World Championship among military personnel. In 1996, he won a silver medal at the European Championships in Vejle and participated in competitions in the Atlanta Olympic Games - reached the finals, but lost to Algerian Josin Soltani in the decisive match. Having received the Olympic silver medal, I decided to try myself on a professional level and left the team.

The first professional fight was held in April 1997, in the first round by technical knockout defeated the British Wayne Jones. Over the next four years, he won 24 consecutive fights, including winning the titles of intercontinental champion in the second lightweight champion of the World Boxing Association (WBA), the international champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), and the champion of the European Boxing Union (EBU). In August 2001, he suffered the first loss in his career, losing by technical knockout to the Mexican Luis Alfonso Lizarrago [1] . After this failure, his statistics began to decline, victories began to alternate with losses - the Bulgarian lost almost all of his titles and in December 2007, after another unsuccessful match, he decided to end his career as a professional boxer.
