Biography
Born in the Malay city of Penang , where his father Peter Beale served as a military physician. Mother Julia Wright was also a doctor.
At age 14, he first appeared on the stage as Desdemona in the production of the Redgrave School Theater at Clifton College.
Studied at Cambridge University . In 2003 he was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
Awards and Prizes
In 1998, he received the Broadcasting Press Guild Award and the RTS Television Award as the best actor for the film “Dance to the Music of Time”.
Thrice received the Laurence Olivier Award : in 1996, as the best supporting actor for his role in the Benjonson comedy Volpone . In 2000, he received the Olivier Award as the best actor in the musical for the role of Pangloss in staging Leonard Bernstein ’s operetta Candide, and in 2003 as a dramatic actor, for the title role in Chekhov’s play Uncle Vanya [6] .
In 2013, he received the BAFTA TV Award in the nomination “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” for playing the role of Falstaff in a mini-series directed by the BBC based on Shakespearean plays [7] [8] .
