Club
Unsal spent most of his career at Galatasaray , which he joined in 1994 from the Karabykspor club. Together with Galatasaray, Hakan achieved success both in the domestic and international arena, having won the UEFA Cup and Super Cup in 2000, as well as 5 championships and 4 Turkish cups. In January 2002, Hakan signed a contract with the English Blackburn Rovers . However, already in the summer of 2002 he returned to Galatasaray, having played 8 games for Rovers. After a trip to England, Unsal spent 2 more seasons at Galatasaray. In 2005 he moved to Rizespor , in which he ended his career at the end of the 2005/06 season.

Hakan made his debut in the Turkish national team in 1996. He was a member of the European Championship 2000 and World Cup 2002 . At the championships in Japan and Korea, the incident between Rivaldo and Unsalu received wide publicity. Rivaldo was about to take a corner, Unsal, believing that the Brazilian was taking time (Brazil won 2-1), kicked the ball in his direction. Despite the fact that the ball hit Rivaldo in the legs, the Brazilian fell and grabbed his face. Hakan was immediately removed, and the Brazilians calmly brought the match to victory. Following the match, Rivaldo was fined for simulating, but many found this measure too mild.
