Story
The film takes place in 2012 in Perm . The protagonist, a 37-year-old biologist Viktor Sluzhkin ( Konstantin Khabensky ), who was dismissed from the research institute , gets a job as a geography teacher from school for lack of money. At home, Nadia’s wife ( Elena Lyadova ), tired of the daily rush, refuses to sleep with her husband, asks Sluzhkin to “finish it all” and have a mistress, but so that she does not know about it. His life begins to change with the advent of her former classmate and close friend Budkin ( Alexander Robak ). Soon, Nadia begins an affair with Budkin in love with her. After a serious male conversation, Sluzhkin gives way to a spouse to a friend.
At school, Sluzhkin does not find a common language with the class, the children seem to him too rollicking, primitive, not held as individuals. Of his colleagues, the geographer selects only an effective German teacher, Kira Valerievna ( Eugene Brik ), but she preferred Budkina to him. Upon learning that Budkin abandoned her for Nadia, Kira Valerievna tries to seduce Servikin, but he gets drunk in her apartment and falls asleep in a full bath.
Sluzhkin, having lost to the cards to one of the students, agrees to go with him and his classmates on a long-promised campaign, to rafting on a catamaran on the river. Already in the train, the geographer gets drunk in the insole with Gradusov (Andrey Prytkov) - a bully and an informal class leader who has clearly expressed criminal inclinations. Schoolchildren who relate to Sluzhkin not as a teacher, but as a yard friend, remove him from the post of commander of the campaign.
On the last day of the trip, the geographer leaves for the nearest village to arrange transportation to the railway station, together with schoolgirl Masha Bolshakova ( Anfisa Chernykh ), who is in love with him. On the way, Masha confesses to Sluzhkin that he loves him, he reciprocates, but makes it clear that they cannot be together. Heavy rain begins, both get wet to the skin. When they reach the village, they discover that almost no one has been living there for a long time. Masha almost faints from the cold, Sluzhkin tries to take her in his arms, but there is no strength. Having lost the night, they go out to the dwelling with people and find a house where the stove is heated. Masha faints on the stairs in wet clothes, Serzhkin brings her to her senses, undresses and warms her, clinging to the hot stove, not letting her fall.
In the morning, returning to the camp, Sluzhkin and Masha see how the other participants of the campaign independently overcome Dolgan, the most difficult and dangerous threshold on the river.
After the trip, the headmaster, having learned from the video made by the participants of the trip about the drunkenness of the geographer in the campaign and the risk to which he exposed the children, asks Sluzhkin to write a letter of resignation at his own request, and Sluzhkin leaves the school.
Again there is no money even for cigarettes and Viktor Sluzhkin, twisting a self-roll with a kind of self-gardening, looks from the high balcony at the Perm distance ...

The title of the film (like books) is “rhythmically organized teaser”, which was invented by the graduate student of Degrees about a new teacher [8] .
The idea of a film adaptation of the novel "The geographer drank the globe" belongs to the producer Valery Todorovsky [9] . Initially, he wanted to shoot himself, but then he drew to the production of director Alexander Veledinsky [10] . The script was written by Veledinsky with the participation of Valery Todorovsky and Rauf Kubaev. The author of the novel writer Alexei Ivanov did not take part in the work on the script [11] . But during the filming, when the scene of the lesson was shot at the backwater, where Sluzhkin tells the students about Kama, there was not enough text in volume. Then they turned to Alexei Ivanov with a request to write the missing text, and that very evening the writer sent it [9] . The creators of the film, considering the image of Sluzhkin to be archetypal for Russia, found it possible to transfer the action of the novel from the 1990s to the present day [10] . Some storylines had to be abandoned, as they did not fit in the two-hour film format. So, in the film there are no childhood memories of Sluzhkin [11] .
Actors for the main roles were selected at the stage of writing the script. Director Alexander Veledinsky sees the similarity between Konstantin Khabensky and the hero depicted on the cover of the first edition of the novel. In the novel, the main character Sluzhkin is 28 years old, in the film the hero of Khabensky is older. The author of the novel, Alexei Ivanov, when he saw the actor on the set in a suit and in an image, absolutely believed in him [11] .
Among several thousand Perm schoolchildren, a casting was held to select 30 people for filming. The children in the film were made a little older: the most adult of them is not 15, but 16 years old [11] . An ordinary Perm schoolboy Andrei Prytkov was selected for the role of the bully Gradusov, who in appearance did not look like the book Gradusov, but, according to Alexei Ivanov, “got to the very point” [12] .
Creation
Filming took place in 2011-2012 in Perm (microdistricts Nizhnyaya Kurya, Vodniki, Razgulay, Workers' settlement, Visim ), the village of Usva, Gremyachinsky district . The film shows the Usva River, along which the heroes make rafting , and the Usvinsky Pillars rocks. The stunt shooting was carried out on the threshold of Revun on the Iset River in the Sverdlovsk Region [13] . Then, to increase the sense of danger on the river, the possibilities of computer graphics were used [14] . School episodes were filmed at school number 1 in Zakamsk [9] .
The film was shot for a total of two years, there were 34 shooting days, two expeditions and a planned five-month break: for shooting an episode of a trip along the river, they waited for water, which happens only for two weeks in May, and the rest of the time the river is shallow. Therefore, the winter block was removed in November 2011, and then they waited until April to take pictures of the interiors of the school, through the windows of which the spring “looked”. Then the crew moved 200 km from Perm to shoot episodes of the campaign [11] .
The music for the film was written by the guitarist of the group " Aquarium " Alexei Zubarev . In addition, the film sounds a lot of songs - from classics to chanson. In the trailer for the film, the song “ I'm free!” " Of the Kipelov group. The same song sounds in the picture, but not performed by Kipelov , but by one of the characters [15] (at the beginning of the film in the train, it is performed by a street singer who lives in Perm, working at Perm II station). The Russian folk song “Dove flew” in the film is performed by Elena Frolova .
Reviews and criticism
The author of the novel "The geographer drank the globe," Alexei Ivanov: "The novel in this film is alive. Of course, much has been lost, because transferring one art system to another is a path that involves certain losses, and losses are inevitable, but on the other hand, there are gains on this path. I think that everything turned out to be the best possible, because the spirit of the novel is preserved, and the main plot too ” [16] .
The writer and journalist Dmitry Bykov , who described “Geographer ...” as “the most important Christian statement of recent years,” wrote: “ “ Geographer ”is praised and praised a lot, and this is just not happy, because the film is not about kind and ordinary people , and his strength is not that they talked smartly, professionally and funny about the life of a Russian intellectual in the province for the first time in many years. Veledinsky makes a picture - in the form of a comedy, essentially deeply tragic - at the junction of the genres: “ Let's Live Until Monday ” meets here on that Monday, which begins on Saturday ” [17] .
Film critic Yuri Gladilshchikov considers the script processing of the novel to be successful, compares it with the remake of Le Carré ’s novel “ Spy, Get Out!” ”, Where everything was rewritten, but at the same time, the essence, plot and spirit of the novel are paradoxically preserved. “The main difference between the novel and the film is this. The novel is about how sadly, quickly and unpromisingly the hopes of youth, entrenched in school times, disappear. That is why the theme of the school is important in the novel. That is why there are many memories of the hero about his own school years (which are not in the film). And the film is about the futility of life in general, and above all, Russian life, which is a generalization of the life of the world intelligentsia. The film is about the intelligentsia . ” According to the critic, the origins of the film “Geographer drank the globe” should be sought in Chekhov’s “ Uncle Van ”, as well as such Soviet intelligent films as “ Flying in a dream and in reality ”, “ Autumn Marathon ” and “ Vacation in September ” [18] .
Culturologist Daniil Dondurey notes: “Geographer is a classic mainstream! The conversation in it is about values: the wife will understand that you are wonderful, and even if she goes to your friend, she will come back anyway. You can’t sleep with a schoolgirl. If you are an intelligent person, you can work at school without a diploma and teach children the most important thing - how to find yourself in life ... Such films in Russia should be released 20-25 a year, as in Soviet times ” [19] .
Film critic Andrei Plakhov regrets that the novel was not filmed in 2003, when it was first published. The critic notes that in the novel “ the very nerve of the transit years of the 1990s was caught, which is leaving so quickly, turning living urgency at best into nostalgic retro, at worst into archaic. No, “Geographer” is still pleasantly perceived, but it’s difficult to believe in such high school students as they are shown in the film, in their relationship with a teacher who looks like a bigger child than they are. Everything has its time, and if the on-screen “Geographer” appeared ten years ago, he would not have had a price. And Khabensky, by the way, was then younger ... ” [20] .
Film critic Elena Stishova points out that the film “ was rigidly conceptualized and embedded in a discourse that, in my opinion, is not in the literary original - in the novel by Alexei Ivanov,“ The geographer drank the globe, ”and“ the director’s gesture shifts - it changes the meaning of the story and offers a slightly different story on the same material and with the same heroes . " She also notes that for her, “the opening of the film seems different, fundamentally more significant than the betrayal of gouging and the vileness of a novice careerist: the Russian cultural code is a constant, outside of which Russia cannot and cannot be .” [21]
