Almonds ( lat. Prunus subg. Amýgdalus ) - a subgenus of woody plants of the genus Plum ( Prunus ) of the family Pink ( Rosaceae ) with seeds with an edible kernel. Common almonds are widely cultivated.

Botanical Description
The subgenus includes deciduous trees and low - branched shrubs . The leaves in the kidneys are folded longitudinally.
The flowers are bisexual, almost sessile, solitary or collected 2-3 in racemose inflorescences, bloom before the appearance of leaves, on the growth of last year. Two leaf buds are located on both sides of the flower buds.
Fruit - a drupe , usually covered with velvety or fleecy pubescence, less often naked. The mesocarp is fleshy, when the fruit ripens, it sometimes disappears, exposing the endocarp. The endocarp is often covered with grooves or small indentations or smooth.
