Red Lantern (film)

The Red Lantern is the feature film of 1919 by Albert Capellani . The film premiered in the United States on May 4, 1919 . The film is based on the novel of the same name by Edith Verry. The film fell into Soviet distribution in 1922 [1] and was popular. It is also known that the film went on until 1924 [2] , and possibly even later. It has been preserved to this day in the State Film Fund (according to other sources - in the Cinémathèque Royale [3] ). In the film, the famous actress Alla Nazimova played two roles at once, which this film brought “to the forefront of movie stars”. [four]

Story

Mali (Alla Nazimova), the daughter of a Chinese woman and a European, was raised in a circle of missionaries. She fell in love with the son of one missionary, but he left her for her stepsister (Alla Nazimova). Offended by Mali decides to take revenge on the entire white race, and lead the Chinese people to revolt. Imagining herself a soothsayer of the Red Lantern, she utters strange prophecies that do not come true, and then commits suicide.

Criticism

  • “Everything was done to make the film beautiful. Forgot only about the situation. Therefore, the impression was that it was happening at the Trocadero Museum or at the 1900 World's Fair. ” (Louis Delluc) [1]
  • The reviewer of the New York Times magazine praised the film, noted the wonderful acting and excellent directing. He also praised the beautiful locations. [5]
