Life and work
M. Mofra began painting at the age of 18, under the influence of two artists from his native city of Nantes - brothers Charles and Alfred Ledyuk. Originally acted as an amateur artist. As a professional merchant, in 1884-1890 he painted only in his free time. During these years, Mofra became acquainted with such an artistic phenomenon as impressionism. Mofra exhibited his works at the Paris Salon of 1886 , where they were noticed and praised by Octav Mirbo . In the same year, Mofra, as a participant in the Paris Salon, was invited to the Nantes Exhibition of Fine Arts, which is held every three years and which exhibits universally recognized masters, including Eugene Boudin , Leon Bonn , Pierre Puvi de Chavannes , Jules Delaunay , Emile Desone with which Mofra will subsequently associate a strong friendship.
In 1890, M. Mofra became a professional artist. He left Nantes, lived and worked in Brittany, where he met with Paul Gauguin and Paul Serusier . After returning from Brittany to Paris, Mofra in 1892 became the first artist to settle in the famous Bato Lavoir workshop in Montmartre , which would later become the Parisian residence for artists. His studio immediately became a meeting place for his friends, especially Desone, Aristide Briand and poet Victor-Emile Michelet. Since 1904, Pablo Picasso lived and worked in this building.
In 1894, in Paris, in the gallery of Le Barque de Butville , the first personal exhibition of M. Mofra was held. Since 1895, Mofra entered into business relations with Paul Duran-Ruel , who became his art dealer and remained so throughout his life, organizing exhibitions of the artist's works. In 1896, Mofra again exhibited his work in the Paris Salon . In 1916, M. Mofra was awarded the honorary officer title " artist of the fleet ."
In the paintings of M. Mofra, one can also feel the influence of pointillism of such masters as Camille Pissarro and Alfred Sisley , and the bright colors of the Pont Aven art school . At the same time, Mofra remained an independent painter with his own characteristic style - most of his paintings are devoted to marine and landscape subjects, depicting the beautiful world of nature. The master’s paintings are included in the collections of the largest museums in the world, including the Paris Orsay , the London Tate Modern Gallery, and the Chicago Art Institute .
