History
In 1565, a marriage was made in France between Prince Ludovico Gonzaga and Princess Henrietta of Cleves . Ludovico Gonzaga was the son of Federico II Gonzaga , Duke of Mantua and Margarita Paleolog , Marquise of Monferrato. His mother’s grandmother was Princess Anna Alansonska , who bequeathed her possessions to France to her granddaughter Isabella Gonzaga, who, in turn, gave way to their younger brother, Ludovico Gonzaga. Henrietta of Cleves was the Crown Duchess of Nevers and the Duchess of Rethel. She brought these titles and possessions to her husband's dowry. [one]
In 1580, in Paris , a couple was born to a couple, Charles I Gonzaga-Nevers , who inherited the titles of the Duke of Nevers, the Duke of Rethel and Prince Arsch. In 1627, after the death of a cousin of Vincenzo II Gonzaga , the last representative of the main branch of the Gonzaga clan, he inherited the title of Duke of Mantua, because of which he had to participate in the war for the Mantua inheritance . To strengthen his position on the throne, he married his son and heir, Charles II Gonzaga, to Maria Gonzaga , Duchess of Monferrato, daughter of Duke Francesco IV Gonzaga . [2]
In 1622, Charles II of Gonzaga, after the death of Henri of Lorraine , the brother of his mother, Caterina of Lorraine , inherited the titles of the Duke of Mayenne and the Duke of Aigillon. His son Charles III Gonzaga bore the titles of the Duke of Nevers, the Duke of Réthel, the Duke of Mayenne, the Duke of Aigillon and under the name of Charles II of Gonzag the titles of the Duke of Mantua and the Duke of Monferrato. The family died away with the death in 1708 of Ferdinand Carl Gonzag-Never , the last Duke of Mantua and Monferrato.
