Biography
Mai Long was born in 1930 in Haiphong .
In 1945-1954, he actively participated in the battles of the Resistance against the French colonialists [1] .
He began to study painting in 1948 under the guidance of To Ngok Van . In 1950 he entered, in 1954 he graduated from an art school, in 1961-1966 he studied at the , graduating from it.
Since 1964, he began to engage in animation, and after graduating from university, he joined the puppet cartoon studio. In 1967 he participated in the creation of the first Vietnamese color cartoon, later he was the main artist and director of many cartoons on the themes of folk legends [2] .
He is a member of the Vietnam Artists Association.
Many of his paintings are exhibited not only in museums in Vietnam, but also in museums in several other countries, especially France and Russia (the Museum of Oriental Art in Moscow, the Penza Museum of Fine Arts, and so on), as well as in private collections. The artist has repeatedly received prizes at national painting exhibitions [3] , his works have also been exhibited abroad (in the USSR of the 1980s, as well as in France, Italy, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada, Czechoslovakia and so on) .
In creating his paintings, Mai Long combines the traditions of national painting and modern technology; the paintings are mainly painted with watercolors on silk [4] , and silk is used, which is different in density and texture, and it draws silk not on paper, but on a stretcher, drawing only clear foreground contours on dry silk, then doing most of the work on wet silk [5] . In some of his early works, the influence of European impressionism is noticeable. The theme of most of his work is the nature of Vietnam (rice fields, landscapes of coasts and so on), as well as stories from Vietnamese mythology and political cartoons .
