Biography
Arkady Kartoshkin was born on December 16, 1925 in the village of Otyezhee (now the Baryatinsky district of the Kaluga region ). In 1940, he graduated from seven classes of the school, after which he worked as a shepherd. At the beginning of World War II he was in occupation, was driven to work in Germany , but escaped on the way. After the liberation of his homeland by the Soviet units, he left for the Chelyabinsk region , graduated from the factory apprenticeship school there, after which he worked as an excavator. In April 1943, Kartoshkin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since August of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He participated in the liberation of the Ukrainian and Byelorussian SSR, the Baltic states, and Poland . He was wounded twice. By April 1945, Junior Sergeant Arkady Kartoshkin commanded a machine gun at the 37th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 12th Guards Rifle Division of the 61st Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the forcing of the Oder [1] .
On April 17, 1945, Kartoshkin, with his calculation, was one of the first to cross the Oder in the area of the Neuglitzen settlement 13 kilometers north of Vritsen and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore. With his direct participation, 6 enemy counterattacks were repelled. Kartoshkin destroyed several firing points, 2 machine guns, more than 20 German soldiers and officers. In those battles, he died. He was buried in the city of Hojna, West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated May 31, 1945, Junior Sergeant Arkady Kartoshkin was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union [1] for "courage, bravery and heroism shown in the fight against the German invaders" of the guard [1] .
He was also awarded the orders of the Red Star and Glory of the 3rd degree, a medal [1] .
