General Information
Jason first picked up a racket at the age of ten, trying to play tennis at his father's cotton farm in New South Wales .
Stoltenberg is married; he and his wife Andrea have two children. [2]
Sports career
- Junior years
Tennis quickly became not just a hobby, but also one of the meanings of life: the Australian soon became one of the leaders of national tennis at his age and entered the national institute of sports. In 1986-88, Stoltenberg spent several super-successful seasons among senior juniors: in 1986, together with Todd Woodbridge , he brought Australia the title at the youth team world final ; a year later, he spent the super-successful season at the junior grand slam tournaments in singles: four times he reached the semifinal stage, played three times in the final match and took one title (at home - at the Australian Open ). The alliance with Woodbridge continued: in 1987-88, the Australians won five of the eight Grand Slam tournaments, without even winning the so-called. "Career helmet" (the weak point was the US Open , where in 1987, Woodbridge did not take part, and in 1988, the Australians lost in the quarterfinals).
- Single career
In parallel with performances in the junior round, the national federation began to pull Jason to the tournaments of the professional series: in 1986 he played his first “ challenger ”, and a year later he made his debut in the main draw of the Australian Open . Having played low-prestigious competitions for several years, by 1988 Stoltenberg had gained enough confidence in himself to declare himself at the Grand Slam tournaments: at the home tournament he uses a good net and reaches immediately to the fourth round, where he is second to the second racket of the competition to Stefan Edberg . Melbourne success made it possible to find a new level of stability and by the end of the year the Australian was playing more confidently with the players of the first two hundred of the rating and gradually climbed onto Pinterest himself. It took several seasons to consolidate to a new level, during which Stoltenberg got closer and closer to the final stages of the Grand Prix tour competitions and won several victories over Top20 players: in August 1989, on the way to his first tournament final at a similar level - in Livingston - he left out of work the fifth racket of the world of Michael Chang .
Exit to the next level of stability began in 1993, when, after healing the injuries, Stoltenberg returned to the tour after a four-month absence. Having won several challengers, the Australian returned to Pinterest by June, and soon, at the grass competitions in Manchester , he won his first title at a similar level, having beaten compatriot Wally Mazur in the final. Later, during the American summer hard series, Stoltenberg writes about his victory over the second racket of the world by Jim Courier .
The following year brought three final finals of the regular season prizes at once (which included the only Masters tournament final in his career in Canada ), and the general stability of the results and regular victories over the strongest players in the world allow him to enter Top20 by the end of October). A slight injury did not allow this success to be developed: a long decline followed and over the next year Stoltenberg gradually fell out of the top hundred of the rating, however, he did not stay in these positions for a long time and thanks to the third round at the US Open and the semi-finals of the Bordeaux tournament, the Australian soon returned to Rambler's Top100. Further, Jason is gradually stabilizing the results more and by May 1996 he rises in the Top50, simultaneously winning a prize in Coral Springs . A few months later, the Australian's main career success at Grand Slam tournaments followed: on the grass courts of Wimbledon, Stoltenberg made it to the semifinals, beating Goran Ivanishevich and losing to Richard Krycek . This success had no further continuation - the Australian continued to periodically beat the leaders, to win secondary titles, but could not go beyond the positions in the third ten. In the late 1990s, it became increasingly difficult for an Australian to stay at a competitive level, he played less and less status competitions, and in the spring of 2001 he announced the end of his playing career. In the last match at a professional level - in the second round of Wimbledon - he is inferior in the protracted five-set match of the then fourth world racket to Juan Carlos Ferrero
- Pair career
The pair career of Stoltenberg was also very successful. For some time, his junior couple remained with Todd Woodbridge and relatively quickly both Australians managed to get into the first hundred of the local classification, having won several titles in the challengers and reached the first, for each, final of the Grand Prix tournament in Madrid in April 1988. Woodbridge soon formed a very strong alliance by Mark Woodford , and Stoltenberg was never able to achieve even close results in pairs. Nevertheless, Jason was very active in playing tournaments of classic and mixed pairs and was regularly in the decisive stages of various minor competitions. In May 1990, the first title was won: together with Andrew Krattsman , the title was won in Singapore . In the future, Jason will win four more paired tournaments as part of the main ATP tour , will reach the quarter finals of Grand Slam tournaments several times, but in the ranking he will not rise above the 23rd line, which he will climb for the first time at the end of March 1991.
- Team and national tournaments
During his professional career, Jason was involved in several Australian national teams several times: in 1989-98 he played 14 matches in the Davis Cup , and in 1995 participated in the team world cup . Nowhere was Stoltenberg marked by particularly striking victories, but in 1993 he, among others, took part in the semifinals and finals of the Davis Cup .
Jason's only appearance in the Olympics was just as background: in 1996, he sowed the tenth in Atlanta , but lost in the second round.
- Coaching career
The Australian Tennis Federation has been actively recruiting all of its strongest players for coaching. Stoltenberg was no exception - in 2001-03 he was listed as a personal trainer of Lleyton Hewitt , helping him to fight for titles at Grand Slam tournaments and a place in the top ten of the singles rating. [3] Subsequently, Jason switched to youth work. [four]
