Biography

Pedro Nolasco was born on February 2, 1962 in the city of La Romana . He achieved his first serious success in the ring in 1978, when he won the flyweight at the Central America and the Caribbean Games in Medellin. A year later, he went to the Pan American Games in San Juan, from where he brought a silver medal. In 1982, he fought for prizes at the World Championships in Munich, but in his very first battle at the tournament, he was defeated by American Bernard Gray. In 1983 he visited the Pan American Games in Caracas, in the lightest weight category he won silver.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, he won the right to defend the country's honor at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles , carried the Dominican banner at the opening ceremony. As a result, he reached the stage of the semi-finals and lost 0-0 to the Italian Maurizio Stekke . Nolasco won a bronze medal, and this is the first Olympic medal in the history of the Dominican Republic (the next will be won only 20 years later by athlete Felix Sanchez at the Games in Athens) [1] .

In 1986, Pedro Nolasco decided to try himself among the professionals, in May he spent his first professional fight, in the featherweight category he outscored American Sammy Ruiz on points. However, his further career was no longer so successful, in the fourth duel he lost to the not-so-strong American Andre Smith, then two defeats from the future world champion of the World Boxing Association of the Mexican Tony Lopez followed.

After several more setbacks in January 1989, Nolasco still entered the title fight for the vacant world boxing title - his opponent was the offender for the Olympic Games Maurizio Stekka, and luck was again not on the side of the Dominican, he was forced to refuse from continuing the fight after the end of the fifth round. At this, the career of a professional boxer for Nolasco ended, in his track record 11 matches, 5 wins (1 ahead of schedule), 6 losses. Leaving the ring, Pedro Julio Nolasco and his family lived in his hometown of La Romana. He was killed on September 15, 1995 by robbers who broke into his house.
