Biography
Sergey Khomenko was born on September 14, 1914 in the village of Maxim (now Kozelets district, Chernihiv region of Ukraine ). After graduating from a craft school in Chernigov, he worked as a carpenter and carpenter in the mines in the Donbass, later he enlisted in the paramilitary guards of the Kiev river port. In 1936 - 1938 Khomenko served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In January 1944, he was re-conscripted. Since March of the same year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, in the rank of sergeant, he commanded the detachment of the 1176th rifle regiment of the 350th rifle division of the 13th army of the 1st Ukrainian front . Distinguished during the liberation of Poland [1] .
July 16, 1944 during the battle for the village of Torquay, Khomenko secession broke into the German trenches. In that battle, Khomenko personally destroyed a German machine gun, thanks to which the battalion successfully advanced. On July 24, 1944, Khomenko was one of the first to cross the San River and stretched a rope through it, thanks to which the entire battalion crossed. In the battlefield on the bridgehead, he repulsed 2 counterattacks by the German troops, destroying 12 enemy soldiers. On July 29, during the crossing over the Vistula in the area of the settlement Lonzhak to the south-west of Sandomir, Khomenko was the first to cross the river and lead the group covering the crossing. In that battle, he personally destroyed 30 enemy soldiers and officers [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 23, 1944, Sergeant Sergey Khomenko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal for number 4591 [1 ] .
In 1946, Khomenko was demobilized. He lived in Kiev , worked as head of the paramilitary security team of the Dnieper basin at the Kiev gateway. Died January 21, 1981 , buried at the Lukyanovsky military cemetery of Kiev [1] .
He was also awarded a number of medals [1] .
