At the end of the course in the 1st Cadet Corps , in 1844 he began serving in the Alexandria Hussar Regiment and, together with the regiment, was on a campaign in Hungary and participated in the Crimean War . During the defense of Sevastopol, he was an adjutant to the Kriegs Commissioner V.N. Nazimov .
In 1861, Zhukovsky left military service and was appointed the capital's world mediator. Three years later, he was elected a fellow foreman of the department of hereditary nobles, then to the members of the main department of the Russian Red Cross Society . When Orenburg suffered from a fire, he was sent there by the Highest Command to distribute benefits to residents of the city. From 1873 to 1888, Zhukovsky held the honorary position of the headman of the Kazan Cathedral . He devoted considerable time to literary studies, placing his articles and poems in the Russian Bulletin , Russian Antiquity and in several newspapers, especially in the Voice . His poems were published in 1886 by a very voluminous collection entitled "My Leisure"; in 1893 a new edition of his poems was published ( St. Petersburg : type. J. Trey, 1893. - 112 pp.). Also published: Works by P.V. Zhukovsky (St. Petersburg: type. A. Perott, 1885. - 192 p.). A number of romances were written by the words of P. V. Zhukovsky, including: “A cherished dream” and “I looked furtively at her” (music by D. K. Sartinsky-Bey), “Kruchinushka” (music by A. F. Fedorov )
Zhukovsky was one of the prominent public figures, rich in energy and sensitive to everything useful and good. On his initiative, the Russian Society for the Protection of Animals arose in 1865, of which he was chairman until the last day of his life, and to whom he devoted considerable time. Thanks to him, this society was widely developed, having opened several branch offices in provincial cities, and noticeably softened the customs of many inhabitants of the capital, alien to compassion for animals. He set up a hospital for animals, helped to eliminate cockfights, and also to publish books and brochures aimed at alleviating the cruel treatment of useful animals. Almost no good undertaking of a society could have done without its energetic participation. Even more noticeable was the activity of P.V. Zhukovsky as the vowel of the St. Petersburg City Council.
Having been among the vowels since 1883, since that time he has always been passionately engaged in the affairs of the city and defended the interests of the inhabitants of the capital. He was the chairman of the hospital and sanitary city commissions. Zhukovsky was interested in the hospital business even at that time when the hospitals were outside the jurisdiction of the city. He was a trustee of St. Panteleimon Hospital, then, from 1864 to 1872, the city Christmas Hospital. In the rank of chairman of the hospital and sanitary commissions, Zhukovsky vigorously fought typhoid and cholera epidemics in St. Petersburg.
In addition, he participated in commissions on the coverage of the capital and on public education. Eighteen elementary, city schools were subordinate to him, as their trustee.
