Sir John (Douglas) Gis ( eng. Biography
In the 1950s, he served in the Ministry for Indigenous Affairs (Department of Native Affairs). In 1958 he became president of the Port Moresby Association of Mixed Races. From 1961 to 1963 - member of the Legislative Council of the Eastern Papua. In 1964 he was elected to the House of Assembly of the country, which was then a colony of Australia .
From 1972 to 1975 after granting autonomy, the deputy chief minister and the minister of internal affairs.
From 1973 to 1975 - Speaker of the House of Assembly of the Papua New Guinea Territory .
Member of the adoption of the country's constitution. September 16, 1975 proclaimed the Act of independence of the new state of Papua New Guinea from Australia.
On the same day he became the first governor-general of Papua New Guinea, the de facto head of state. He held this post until March 1, 1977 . At the same time, Michael Thomas Somare was elected the first prime minister of an independent country.
