At the age of 14 or 15, he settled in the English navy on the ship of Captain James Cook , taking part in the second ( 1772 - 1775 ) and third ( 1776 - 1780 ) round-the-world voyages of the famous explorer. Participated in the last disembarkation of Cook in the Hawaiian Islands.
In 1791 he was appointed head of a large naval expedition to Discovery Bark , which carried out cartographic and research work in the Pacific Ocean . Under the command of Vancouver, the western coast of South America and the Sandwich Islands were explored, but its studies of the Pacific coast of North America and the neighboring islands between 39 ° and 51 ° north latitude are most noticeable at the site of the modern states of California (northern), Oregon and Washington , and southern Canadian province of British Columbia .
In 1792, George Vancouver explored the coast from Cape Mendocino (39 ° 20 'N) to the Strait of Juan de Fuca (48 ° 30' N), and also visited the mouth of the great river unknown to Europeans before that time. (modern Columbia River ). Later he mapped the island in detail, later named after him.
Returning to England, from 1795 until his death, he was busy describing his journey, which was titled: “ Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean ” ( London , 1798 ).
After the death of George Vancouver in 1798, this report was substantially supplemented by Lieutenant Peter Puget .
George Vancouver named cities in Canada and the United States, as well as a large island off the west coast of Canada.
