Biography
Nikolay Sokolov was born on April 23, 1899 in the village of Akshuat (now the Baryshsky District of the Ulyanovsk Region ). Received secondary education. He graduated from Simbirsk Chuvash Teacher's Seminary (1919) [1] . In 1919, Sokolov was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . Participated in the battles of the Civil War . In 1922, Sokolov graduated from military engineering courses in Samara , in 1932 - advanced training courses for commanders. From January 1943 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, commanded the 3rd pontoon-bridge brigade . Under his leadership, she shipped Soviet troops across the Neva , Dnieper , Sluch , Goryn, and Dniester , built the “ road of life ” near Leningrad [2] .
The Sokolov team distinguished itself during the crossing of the Vistula. From 3 to 5 August 1944, units of the brigade built a floating bridge, sending tanks, fuel and ammunition across the river. When the German troops attempted to seize the crossing, the brigade's fighters repulsed their attacks for two days, holding it back [2] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 23, 1944, Colonel Nikolai Sokolov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin for “skilful leadership of the pontoon-bridge brigade when building a crossing for the tank army through the Vistula and personal courage and heroism.” and the Gold Star Medal No. 1992 [2] .
After the war, Sokolov continued service in the Soviet Army. In 1954, in the rank of Major General, he was dismissed. Lived in Kiev . He died on December 20, 1980, was buried at the Lukyanovka military cemetery of Kiev [2] .
Awards
He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner , the Order of Kutuzov of the 2nd degree, two Orders of the Red Star , a number of medals and a foreign order [2] [3] .
