Bishop
He was a monk of one of the Trans-Volga monasteries.
At the beginning of 1551, he was ordained bishop of Ryazan , and Metropolitan Macarius headed the ordination. In the same year, Kassian participates in the famous Stoglav Cathedral , which was faced with the task of renewing the Russian church, cleansing it of its shortcomings, and improving its life in all respects.
Cassian participates in the Council in 1553 about the Bashkin heresy. According to a source [1] , during the council he defended his elder Isaac Belobaev , accused of heresy [2] . Probably in connection with this, he spoke out against the “Illuminator” Iosif Volotsky , who was used at the council as a source that has undoubted authority. The source reports that after this the Bishop of Ryazan broke paralysis, which was interpreted as God's punishment. Cassian was to leave the pulpit and retired to the Kirillo-Belozersky monastery . The same source reports a certain theological controversy in which Cassin argued that it was impossible to call Christ God Almighty . The author argues against and completes the story of Cassian’s trip to the monastery of Dmitry Prilutsky . At the monastery, Cassian demanded his honors in accordance with his episcopal rank, but he did not receive them. After that, he retired to the Kirilo-Belozersky monastery, where he died on October 21, 1556. He was buried in the porch of the Assumption Cathedral (right side, at the front door) of the Cyril-Belozersky Monastery [3] .
