Biography

Born on October 21, 1905 in the village of Vasilsursk, Nizhny Novgorod Region, in a working class family. He graduated from three classes of school. He worked on the rafting of the forest, then in the criminal investigation department, as a trade union worker. In 1926 he graduated from the Ryazan Infantry School, in 1931 - courses "Shot" . He served in Transbaikalia. He commanded the 602nd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the 109th Motorized Division of the 5th Mechanized Corps of the 16th Army. In early June 1941, the regiment was relocated to Belarus.

Since July 31, 1941 - at the front. Wounded in the first battles. He was surrounded, made his way alone to his own. He fought on the Western, Bryansk, Belorussian and 1st Belorussian fronts. He was awarded two orders of the Red Banner, orders of Kutuzov, World War II and the Red Star. The 217th Rifle Unecha Red Banner Division under the command of Colonel N. P. Massonov made a significant contribution to the liberation of Bobruisk . About how it was, the lines of the war years document tell:

 Colonel N.P. Massonov, commander of the rifle division, distinguished himself in the battles for the liberation of Bobruisk. Two regiments of the division under his command broke through the enemy’s defenses in the Rogachev area and reached Berezina on the night of June 29, 1944 , crossed the river and participated in the liberation of Bobruisk. In the Bobruisk direction, the division destroyed 48 tanks and self-propelled guns, captured 32 mortars, 76 vehicles, 2,000 rifles and 300 enemy grenades. 3700 fascists were destroyed, one and a half thousand soldiers and officers were captured. 

Nikolai Massonov was killed on July 17 near the city of Svisloch , when, when he was detouring the division’s parts by a car, he was blown up by a mine (now the intersection of Pogranichnikov and Gagarin streets). For the exceptional courage, decisiveness and skillful infliction of heavy losses on the enemy on August 23, 1944 , Colonel N. P. Massonov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumous).

Memory

  • He was buried in a mass grave on the Alley of Heroes of the city ​​of Svisloch . One of the streets of the city bears his name. Also in 2006, a memorial sign was installed at the place of his death.
  • In Vasilsursk , the street and the pioneer high school squad were named after him.
  • In Vasilsursk, a memorial plate in honor of the Hero was strengthened on the school building.
  • In Bobruisk , the street was named after him. At its beginning there is a commemorative sign with a portrait of the Hero.
  • In the city of Nizhny Novgorod, the name of the Hero is placed on the marble wall in the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin , which has the Eternal Flame burning .
