Content
History
It was established on April 29, 1877 by the Grand Duke of Baden Frederick I as a special upper class of the Order of the Tseringen Lion . September 9, 1896 separated from the Order of the Tseringen Lion and became an independent order. Under the new statute, the Order of Bertold I was divided into 4 degrees and was intended as a reward for faithful service and as a sign of special recognition.
Signs of the Order
The Order's Cross is a golden Maltese cross of white enamel with a narrow rim of white enamel and gold balls at the ends. In the corners of the cross are golden noble crowns. In the center of the front side of the cross is a golden round medallion of red enamel with a narrow gold rim. In the center of the medallion is the golden monogram of the Grand Duke Frederick I (interwoven letters FWL under the crown). On the back of the cross in the medallion is a golden crown. The cross is suspended from the golden crown, which is attached to the order ribbon through the ring. When rewarding for military merit, two crossed golden swords are added, passing through the center of the cross, point up.
The star of the Big Cross is a silver eight-pointed. In the center of the star is a golden round medallion of red enamel with a wide rim of white enamel. In the center of the medallion is a golden knight galloping to the left on a horse. On the rim, the motto of the order is GERECHTIGKEIT IST MACHT ( Justice is Strength ) with gold and a six-pointed asterisk below. When rewarding for military merit, two crossed golden swords are added, passing through the center of the star, point up.

In the center of the medallion is a golden knight galloping to the left on a horse. Ribbon of the order is silk moire red with gold stripes along the edges.
The chain of the order of alternating red gold enamel openwork medallions connected by gold chains: 7 oval medallions with a gold crown in the center and 7 round medallions with a galloping knight. Between the medallions are large pearls enclosed in gold.
