Shah Deniz

Shah Deniz ( azerb. Şahdəniz ) is an offshore gas condensate field in Azerbaijan . Located in the south-west of the Caspian Sea , 70 km southeast of Baku . The depth of the sea in the field of the deposit is from 50 to 650 m. The area of the gas-bearing region is about 860 km². [one]

Geologically refers to the South Caspian oil and gas basin . The total reserves of the field are estimated at 1.2 trillion cubic meters of natural gas and 240 million tons of gas condensate . Field development is carried out by a consortium, which includes the following companies:

  • BP Azerbaijan (25.5%) - operator
  • Statoil Azerbaijan (25.5%)
  • SOCAR Azerbaijan (10%)
  • Elf Petroleum Azerbaijan (10%)
  • LukAgip NV (subsidiary of Lukoil , 10%)
  • Oil Industries Engineering & Construction (10%)
  • Turkish Petroleum Overseas Company Limited (9%)

Gas supplies to Europe are planned to be carried out through the South Caucasus gas pipeline laid along the Baku - Tbilisi - Erzurum route and the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP), then through the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).

Hydrocarbon was discovered by Soviet geologists in 1954 [2] . The field was discovered in 1999 [3] .

The first well with a depth of 6.5 thousand m, drilled from a stationary production platform at a depth of 105 m, began on December 15, 2006 with a flow rate of 5.6 million m³ per day [4] . A few days later, production was suspended due to the detection of a crack and gas leak in the well due to an increase in reservoir pressure. The elimination of these problems took three weeks. On January 23, 2007 , gas production at the well was again suspended due to increased pressure in the well structure.

In December 2006 , Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili , in order to partially abandon more expensive Russian gas, signed a protocol on the supply of 800 million m³ of gas from the Turkish quota from Shah Deniz to Georgia in 2007. At the same time, Azerbaijan would first of all like to compensate for the expected decline in Gazprom’s gas produced here.

By July 2007, the field produced 700 million cubic meters of gas (3 wells). Of these, Azerbaijan received 539 million m³, Georgia - 100 million m³, 45 million m³ was used at compressor stations of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline .

At the end of 2012, 4 wells were operated at the Shakhdeniz gas condensate field.

The second stage of field development is scheduled for 2016-2017. The expected total production from the second stage is 16 billion m³ per year. The developers of several competing pipeline projects planning to transport Azerbaijani gas to Europe - Nabucco , the Trans-Adriatic Gas Pipeline and ITGI - claim this gas. Including, 6 billion m³ - to Turkey, 1 billion m³ - to Greece, 1 billion m³ - to Bulgaria and 8 billion m³ - to Italy. In early October 2015, it was announced that the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Europe would begin in 2022-2025. [5] In addition, Russian Gazprom and Iran are interested in gas supplies from the second stage of field development [6] .

At the World Economic Forum in Davos in early 2013, SOCAR Vice President Elshad Nasirov said that SOCAR extended the contract for the development of the field until 2036 [7] .

In May 2018, the capacity of the production platform at the Shahdeniz field amounted to 10.9 billion cubic meters of gas per year or 30 million cubic meters of gas per day, which meets the starting needs of the Trans-Anatolian gas pipeline (TANAP), opened a month later, for the supply of Azerbaijani gas to Greece and Italy [ 8] . Turkey will meet its needs with Russian gas supplies through the Blue Stream gas pipelines (15.8 billion m³ per year) to the eastern part of the country and the Turkish Stream (15.75 billion m³ per year) to the west, using TANAP mainly for transit of Azerbaijani gas [9] .
