Rispebjerg ( dat. Rispebjerg ) - archaeological site ( hendge ) on the Danish island of Bornholm . Located 7 kilometers west of the village of Snogebek on the way to the village of Pedersker, it is the remains of the Neolithic sanctuary of the sun and earthworks of the Iron Age . [one]

Description

Rispeberg is bordered by the Eleodalen Valley, on the site it is marked by a semicircular rampart of the Iron Age 3 meters high and a dry ditch, 2 meters deep, the creation date of which dates back to about 2000 years ago. There are also traces of three 5000-year-old (c. 2800 BC) woodhenjies , one of which was recreated from the original holes in the earth left from tree trunks, which gives a general idea of the size of the ancient monument. An overview of the entire historical site is available from the observation tower [2] .

Research

The monument was discovered in 1897, when six flint axes and four flint chisels dating from the middle of the Neolithic were found near it. The following year, another 13 flint axes and two chisels were found, which made Rispeberg one of the main finds of similar products in this area. Since all the finds were made in one place, it may have had religious significance [3] .

Rispeberg contains a series of wooden circles created over 2800 years ago. The burnt pieces of clay, flint and bones found in it suggested that this structure was the sanctuary of the Sun, where sacrifices were made. Also found were ritual clay discs with solar signs, buried on opposite edges. Possibly, wooden circles were built over three separate periods [4] [5] .
