The Los Angeles Athletic Club Award is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to honor the legacy of the legendary UCLA Bruins team John Wooden (1910-2010), in whose honor she received her name. John Woodan studied at Purdue University and in 1932 was recognized as the best basketball player of the year among students. After graduation, he coached the teams of Indiana University (1946-1948) and UCLA (1948-1975), in which he made the most successful career in the history of male student basketball, having won ten national NCAA tournaments with it (1964-1965, 1967-1973, 1975 ) Wooden became the first person to be included in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player (1961) and coach (1973).
Initially, the prize was awarded only to men, its first winner was Marques Johnson from UCLA. In 2004, this award was expanded to be presented to women, and Alana Bird of Duke University became its first owner. In addition, since 1999, the trophy has also been awarded to the best coach, and since 2011 to the best team. Kevin Durant from the University of Texas , who received this award in 2007, was the first freshman to win this prize, but in 2012, his achievement was repeated by Anthony Davis from the University of Kentucky , and in 2019 they were joined by Zion Williamson from Duke University . The current winners in this nomination are Zion Williamson of Duke University, Sabrina Ionescu of the University of Oregon and Lon Krueger, trainer of the Oklahoma University men's team.
