Throughout the history of the trotter "Derby" his distance was 1600 m, only in 1956 his distance was 2400 m.

Today, the conditions for drawing the prize are as follows: the prize is played in three rounds (horses start one day three times, with an interval of at least one hour between the gits). The distance of each guitar is 1600 m. Participation in the first two guitars is obligatory, in the third, at the request of the owner. The winner is a horse that takes a place in any two gits or wins at least one of the gits and has the smallest amount of occupied places in any two gits. Prizewinners are determined by the smallest amount of occupied places in any two gits. If the sum of the seats is equal, the winners are determined by the smallest amount of playfulness shown in any two gits. A month before the prize, qualifying races are held for horses wishing to be among the Derby participants. According to the results of these races, a special commission selects applicants for the main trotting prize of the season. Horses that were not selected as Derby participants take part in the “consolation” prize, which is called the “Gildeyts” prize, named after the Gildeits stallion, the Derby winner and an outstanding producer who gave a large number of high-sprung trotters, including Derby winners.

The value of the “Big All-Russian Derby Prize” is very high. Due to the special conditions of the prize draw, the appearance of a random winner is almost completely excluded. The winner, who is called the "derbist", and Derby prize-winners, as a rule, continue their careers with great success and then become worthy producers. The prize record for 2017 belongs to the 2017 Derby winner, mare Ainecke “H”: 1 min. 58.8 seconds

The record of victories in “Derby” among riders belongs to the master-rider of international class, Mikhail Kozlov, who has already won nine times in this prize. In addition, he improved the Derby record three times. In 1989, he won the Sorrento stallion with a record prize of 2.00.1. After exactly 20 years in 2009, he beat those seconds at a stallion in Time Trotpiks - 1.59.7. After another 3 years, in 2012, having won his ninth Derby on the Poltavets stallion, Mikhail Kozlov could bring his horse to the finish more quickly: 1.59.2.
