Story
A 74-year-old restless and grouchy father-alcoholic on the verge of Alzheimer's disease [3] Woody Grant ( Bruce Dern ) receives a flyer stating that he won the lottery one million dollars . The old man leaves home and walks to another city for a prize. He is caught, but the stubborn old man leaves again. His youngest son, David ( Will Forte ), taking pity on his father, decides to take him out of the annoying Billings briefly and travels with him to Lincoln , Nebraska , where the letter came from. The son understands that there is no prize, but the stubborn father believes in his gain [4] .
The road to Nebraska is through Woody's hometown of Hawthorne. Father and son visit Woody's older brother and his family. Grant Sr. visits the places in which he spent his youth - a car repair shop that he once owned, a local bar and the house in which he grew up. At the bar, Woody and David meet Ed Pigram ( Stacy Keach ), a former Woody companion who, many years ago, borrowed an air compressor from Grant Sr. and did not return it. Woody tells him that he became the owner of a million dollars, and the next morning the news about it is scattered throughout the city.
Soon, Woody's wife and David's mother, Kate ( June Squibb ) join them in their journey. They go to the local cemetery, where Kate speaks unflattering about each of Woody's relatives buried here. At the bar, Ed tells David that he wants his share of the million won, since in his youth Woody allegedly owed him a large sum. Other money contenders appear. David meets with the publisher of a local newspaper planning to print an article about Woody’s win. She says that she was once a girl of Grant Sr., and that, unexpectedly for her son, he participated in the Korean War .
Ed for the second time demands money, but David refuses. At the exit from the bar, they are attacked by two masked robbers (nephews Woody Bart and Cole) who take away a letter from the old man with a notification of winning. Later, returning to the bar, father and son discover that Ed reads the letter to all those gathered, simultaneously mocking Woody. The old man silently takes the letter from him, and David hits him in the jaw.
Woody and David finally arrive in Nebraska, but in the office of the advertising agency, as expected, there is no million for them. As a consolation prize, the old man is given a cap for the “lottery winner”. Before leaving the city, David calls at a car dealership, sells his car and buys a pick-up truck, which he had long dreamed of, and a compressor instead of the missing one. For this, the old man needed money. Although he still won’t have to use gifts: he was deprived of his rights, and he doesn’t have a workshop. Woody takes the driver’s seat in the winner’s cap and drives through the city in a new car in front of amazed relatives and acquaintances.
Woody changes places with David and leaves his hometown.

Creation
The Nebraska script fell into the hands of Alexander Payne back in 2002. He agreed to become the director of this tape, but filming was postponed for years, due to the fact that Payne then worked on his other paintings [5] .
Initially, Payne planned to take Gene Hackman for the role of Woody Grant (father), but he announced the end of his film career back in 2004, and did not return to the cinema for the sake of this tape. Stars such as Robert de Niro , Robert Duvall , Jack Nicholson and Robert Forster were ready to play the role of an elderly father, but Payne chose Bruce Dern .
Celebrities such as Brian Cranston , Matthew Modine [3] , Paul Rudd and Casey Affleck claimed David Grant (son), but Payne took on the relatively little-known Will Forte .
The film was shot on black and white film [6] against the wishes of the distributor - Paramount Pictures [5] . Filming was carried out in the cities of Billings ( Montana ) [6] , Buffalo ( Wyoming ), Rapid City ( South Dakota ), in the state of Nebraska [7] , and took only 35 days in November-December 2012.
The premiere of the film took place on May 23, 2013 at the Cannes Film Festival, the film was released for the first time on September 19 of the same year (in Croatia), from September to November 2013 the film was shown at many film festivals in different countries, from December 2013 - wide distribution in the world.
