Biography
He graduated from the Faculty of Geography, Leningrad University . In 1924 he joined the State Hydrological Institute (GGI), where he worked until 1952. From 1929 to 1934 he directed hydrological scientific research in the Soviet Far East . In 1937 he headed the Central All-Union Service of Hydrological Forecasts. After the start of World War II, he took part in the hydrological support of the army.
In 1942 he defended his doctoral dissertation in geography. In 1943 he became deputy director of the Hydrological Institute, holding this position until 1948. In 1945 he joined the CPSU , in 1947 he received the academic title of professor. In 1960 he headed the Hydrology Department of the Institute of Geography of the USSR Academy of Sciences , in 1971 he was appointed president of the Surface Water Commission of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS).
Scientific Contribution
Most of his scientific works are devoted to the water balance of the USSR and the globe as a whole, the protection of water resources and their complex use, water as a component of the natural environment, and the methodology of long-term forecasts of the state of water resources.
He created his own method for calculating the transformations of the water balance and river flow through forest reclamation and agronomic measures. He compiled the world's first river flow maps in the USSR and the first hydrological directory of the resources of the Far East.
During his life he published more than 400 scientific papers and trained more than 50 hydrologists of the USSR and the socialist countries.
Rewards
He was awarded many medals and four orders.
