The breed was bred by German zoologists brothers Heinz Heck and Lutz Heck (director of the Berlin Zoo) at the Munich Zoo Hellabrunn as an attempt to recreate the tarpan phenotype by repeatedly crossing domestic horses with primitive features. The first foal of the program appeared on May 22, 1933 in Hellabrunn.
