Gorini, Konstantino

Konstantino Gorini (January 9, 1865, Milan - September 3, 1950, ibid.) - Italian microbiologist.

Born in the family of a railway engineer who died a few months after his birth; was raised by her mother and her second husband, the famous Milanese doctor Gaetano Pini. In 1890 he graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Pavia, after which he was sent for some time to Eritrea, then the Italian colony, to combat the cholera epidemic. After returning from Africa, he joined the laboratory at the Ministry of Health of Rome, where he first began to engage in scientific research in the field of agromicrobiology.

In 1893, he became an employee of the University of Pavia, a year later he received the post of professor of hygiene. In 1896 he went to work in Rome, heading the newly created bacteriological department of the capital’s Ministry of Health. In 1902 he moved to Milan, where he became an employee of the Agricultural School (in the future, the Agricultural University of Milan University) and where he created the first agricultural bacteriological laboratory in Italy. In 1927 he became a foreign corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1935, formally retired, but continued to engage in research almost until the end of his life.

Over his life he has written more than 200 scientific papers published both in Italian and in foreign scientific journals. His main works are devoted to morphology, cultivation, physiology, enzymatic activity of lactic acid bacteria, as well as the physiology of lactic acid and various general topics of microbiology and hygiene; studied the role of bacteria in the coagulation of milk and the effect of microflora on silage.
