Biography
Born February 28, 1740 in the family of Baron Arendt Dietrich Palen and his wife Elizabeth, nee von Derfelden. He came from an old family of Estland nobles, originating from Pomerania. Brother of the St. Petersburg Governor Peter Palen .
In 1755 he entered the Life Guards Cavalry Regiment, in 1758 he was promoted to corporal , in 1759 - Corporal Corporal and Wachmistra . In the same year, Palen was released into the army as lieutenant and took part in the Seven Years War (from 1759 to 1762), when on June 24 he was promoted to registers . On August 13, 1769, Palen was promoted to second major, and on June 24, 1770, he was promoted to prime majors and March 15, 1771 to be Corporal of the Cavalier Guard Corps, listed on the 3rd Cuirassier Regiment.
In the same year, on July 30, at his own request, Palen was dismissed from the Cavalier Guard corps. During his military service, Baron Palen, in addition to the campaign in Prussia, during the Seven Years' War , participated in campaigns: in 1764 in Poland, in a campaign against the troops of the Hetman Branicki and Prince Radziwill, where being, from Prince Dashkova several times light troops with small we use childcare in the necessary premises. On August 13, 1769, Palen was sent on a secret expedition to the navy and sent to England, and from there to Morea, which was the purpose of his sending.

On April 7, 1771, Palen was awarded the Order of St. George, 4th degree, for bravery and courageous deeds during the attack in Mizistra in Morea and during the expedition to Negropont. In 1771-1772 he commanded the detachment in Poland and Lithuania, and broke up various enemy parties with them.
In December 1773, Palen petitioned for resignation from military service due to poor health from the wound received and was dismissed on December 31, with the rank of lieutenant colonel and appointed provincial adviser to the Revel governor general. In 1783, he was promoted to college counselor; in the same year, on October 10, he was appointed chairman of the Revel Chamber of Criminal Cases. In 1790 he was promoted to state councilors, in 1798, upon the destruction of governorship, he was elected to the post of nobility by the choice of the nobility. In 1807 he was promoted to Privy Councilor and in 1814 granted the Order of St. Anne of the 1st degree.
He died on May 19, 1817. Buried in the family estate of Palms, Estland Province. Married to Countess Beata Ulrika Sophia von Stenbock (1759-1845) had a son Karl Magnus ( Matvey Ivanovich ; 1779-1863).
