The Yekaterinoslav Cossack Army ( Yekaterinoslav Cossack Corps , the New Don Cossack Army ) is a military Cossack formation of the Russian Empire that existed at the end of the 18th century .
It was formed by Prince Potemkin from the Bug Cossack regiments and odnodvorets , former soldiers of the Ukrainian Landmilica Corps , settled in Yekaterinoslav Viceroyalty , as well as from Old Believers , burghers and artisans of Yekaterinoslav, Voznesensky and Kharkov governorates, assigned to the army in 1787 . The population of the army as of 1788 was more than 50,000 people, of which the military personnel reached 10,000. It distinguished itself during the capture of Akkerman , Kiliya and Ishmael , taking part in the Russian-Turkish war of 1787-1791 .
There was no specific statute on the service order of the Yekaterinoslav Cossacks, and the foremen of the Donskoy Army controlled the local Cossacks at their own discretion. Due to this, and also due to military circumstances, the army became disordered, and a significant part of the Yekaterinoslav Cossacks filed a petition to return them to their "pristine state."
In 1796 , at the suggestion of Prince Zubov, Catherine II ordered the disbanding of the Yekaterinoslav army, and assign the Cossacks to bourgeoisie and state peasants, providing them with a two-year benefit from paying official taxes.
In 1802, part of its constituent population was relocated to the Kuban , where the latter subsequently served as the basis for the organization of the Caucasian regiment of the Kuban Cossack army [1] [2] .
