William George Rafton ( born William George Roughton ; May 11, 1909 , Manchester - June 7, 1989 , Southampton ) is an English football player and football coach. He played for the Huddersfield Town and Manchester United clubs in the 1930s. After the war, he was the head coach of Exeter City and Southampton .

Player Career
He began his professional career at Huddersfield Town Club. Played as a defender. In the 1933/34 season, he helped his club take second place in the championship. Total spent for the team 171 matches.
In September 1936 he moved to Manchester United . He made his debut for the Reds on September 12 in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford , which ended with the victory of United with a score of 3: 2 [1] . At the end of the 1936/37 season , United dropped out of the First Division , but in the next season was able to return to the elite English division. Spent three full seasons for Manchester United, having played 92 matches, after which the official competitions were discontinued due to the outbreak of war .
Coaching career
After the war ended, Rafton became the head coach at the Exeter City club. Under his leadership, the " Greeks " consistently performed in the Third Southern Division , not having achieved any success.
In March 1952, Rafton was invited to the Southampton , where he replaced the head coach Sid Cann . At the same time, Norman Kerkman , who became a playing coach there, moved to Exeter from Southampton.
With Rafton at the head, the “ saints ” were eliminated in the Third Southern Division in the 1952/53 season . In the next two seasons, Southampton was unable to return to the Second Division, and in September 1955 was fired. He was replaced by Ted Bates , who later became a legendary person for the club.
