Biography

Koja Yusuf Pasha was born in 1730 in Georgia. He was captured and enslaved and brought to Istanbul. He converted to Islam and was freed by Captain Hassan Effendi. Swam in the merchant fleet. Then he served with Hassan Pasha in Algeria, who, becoming Kapudan Pasha , appointed him treasurer. In 1785, the governor of Mora elevated him to the rank of vizier.

On January 25, 1786, Sultan Abdul-Hamid I appointed him the Great Vizier. He held this post until May 7, 1789. During the Russo-Turkish War (1787-1792) he was commander in chief of the Ottoman Empire. In the Battle of Caransebes he defeated the army of the Austrian Empire, led by Joseph II of Austria [2] under surprising circumstances: he reached the battlefield only two days later, and the Austrians killed themselves as a result of a drunken mass fight.

December 19, 1789 was appointed to the post of Kapudan Pasha; in 1790 he received the position of Governor General of Konya , after which he was Governor General of Bosnia.

On February 15, 1791, Sultan Selim III again appointed him to the post of Great Vizier. May 4, 1792 resigned. In 1793 he was appointed Governor-General of Jeddah and guard of Medina.

Koja Yusuf Pasha died in 1800 in Jeddah.

In Istanbul, the Kabatash district still has a fountain built with funds from Koja Yusuf Pasha.
