Biography
Born in the family of county solicitor Semyon Semenovich Zevakin. Received a good education. As soon as she reached adulthood (no later than 1822), she married the Nizhny Novgorod landowner, elected district judge Razumnik Vasilyevich Zhukov, son of the writers Vasily Mikhailovich and Anna Sergeyevna Zhukovs [3] . She began to engage in literary activities in St. Petersburg, where in 1830, having left her husband, she arranged for her son to go to a gymnasium in Saratov , where her father lived at that time [4] , and left for St. Petersburg. Friendship with S. A. Golitsyna allowed Zhukova to get acquainted with the life of a high society, to study contemporary literature. During the years 1830-1837, she often visited St. Petersburg, but there is no reliable information about her acquaintance with the literary world of St. Petersburg.
The first work of M. S. Zhukova, published anonymously, was the collection “Evenings at Karpovka” (St. Petersburg, 1837-1838) [5] . V. G. Belinsky after the release of “Evenings at Karpovka” wrote:
One of the best phenomena of this year in fairness should be called the works of Ms. Zhukova [6]
The success is extraordinary and - I must tell the truth - very, very not undeserved! <...> Now it’s hardly possible in any bookstore to find it
In 1838, Zhukova left for treatment in the south of France and in Italy. In 1839, her short story The Falling Star was published in Domestic Notes (vol. V, No. 9). After returning to her homeland, her collection of Tales appeared in print in 2 parts [7] , which also provoked approving responses [8] [9] . In the same 1840, she again went abroad - again without a son, who remained to study in one of the St. Petersburg gymnasiums. The trip resulted in a separate edition of Essays on Southern France and Nice. From road notes ”(St. Petersburg, 1844).
Since 1843, Zhukova lived in Russia, then in St. Petersburg, then in Saratov. Collaborated in the " Library for reading ", " Son of the Fatherland ", "Literary newspaper"; her works appeared in the almanacs “Molodik”, “Morning Dawn” and “Russian Conversation”. Later stories by M. S. Zhukova (“Two Sisters”, 1843; “A Summer Cottage on the Peterhof Road”, 1845; “An Episode from the Life of a Country Lady”, 1847) readily printed “ Domestic Notes ”; the last of his lifetime stories (Nadenka) was published by Sovremennik .
In 1848, Zhukova met with the exiled to Saratov with N.I. Kostomarov . From the recollections of I. I. Palimpsestov 's Kostomarov, it is known that at that time Zhukova’s son, who graduated from the university, was the editor of the Saratov Provincial Gazette.
M.S.Zhukova had an artistic talent, which manifested itself in the Arzamas school of Stupa. Later, she “earned a living”, performing copies from paintings by famous artists in the Hermitage [10] . In Saratov, Zhukova performed an album of local flora, which ended up at the Mariinsky Agricultural College [11] .
