Castlestrange Stone

Castlestrange Stone

Castlestrange stone is located on the Castlestrange House near Atlig in Roscommon County. This is a granite boulder, decorated with flowing spirals in the Latin style , dating back to the Iron Age , between 500 BC. e. and 100 g. e.

It is believed that the carver imitated the continental style, which strongly influenced Ireland at that time.

There are only three other stones of this type found in Ireland, of which the most famous is the stone of Turois in County Galway . The purpose of the stones is unknown, but it is believed that they served some religious or ritual purposes.

The stone is a protected national monument [1] .
