Wikipedia logo from 2010 to the present

The Wikipedia logo is the official logo of the Wikipedia Internet encyclopedia, which is a “globe” composed of puzzles , the upper part of which is not finished, with the signature “The Free Encyclopedia”. Each puzzle designates one of the Wikipedia languages . The missing parts of this mosaic, according to some researchers, symbolize the possibility of adding new languages and the fundamental unattainability of the absolute completeness of the contents of the Internet encyclopedia [1] .

Creation History

On January 15, 2001, Jimmy Wales used the American flag as the first Wikipedia logo. However, this logo was considered a temporary option, and later, in the same 2001, it was replaced by the first permanent logo (Fig. 1.1), originally proposed by Bjørn Smestad for Nupedia . A quote from a mathematics book, Opponents by Lewis Carroll, was posted on this logo. However, due to the fisheye projection, only part of the text could be read (highlighted in black):

In one respect this book is an experiment, and may chance to prove a failure: I mean that I have not thought it neces sary to maintain throu ghout the gravity of style which scientific writers usually affect, and which has somehow come to be considered as an 'inseparable accident' of scie ntific teaching. I never co uld quite see the reasonab leness of this immemorial law: subjects there are, no do ubt, which are in their essence too serious to admit of any lightness of treatment - but I cannot recognize Geome try as one of them. Know less it will, I trust, be fou nd that I have permitted my self a glimpse of the comic side of things only at fitting sea sons, when the tired reader might well crave a moment's breathing-space, and not on any occasion where it could endanger the continuity of the line of argument.

Paul Stansifer at the Wikimedia Foundation office, San Francisco , 2012

In November 2001, Wikipedia participants ( Wikipedists ) began to offer new logo options [Note. 1] . In total, 24 projects were presented, among which the project number 24 won, invented by the participant with the nickname The Cunctator (Fig. 1.2). It looked the same as the previous logo, but instead of a quote from Carroll’s work, the text from chapter VI of part I of Leviathan by Thomas Hobbes was used . However, the fact that the text was written in English represented inconvenience for using the logo in Wikipedia sections in other languages. Therefore, some sections completely replaced the text of the quote, some added the national flag to the logo (Fig. 2) or translated the signature “Free Encyclopedia” into their own language, others, like the French section, came up with a completely different logo (Fig. 3).

At the suggestion of Erik Möller , a new logo contest was held to select an emblem suitable for all sections [Note. 2] . The winner of this competition was the logo designed by Paul Stansifer (Fig. 1.3). The new logo was a globe composed of puzzles of different colors with inscriptions in various languages. English Wikipedia switched to it on September 26, 2003 . A little later, a vote was passed on the approval of this logo, on which other variations on the theme of Stansifer’s idea were proposed [Note. 3] . As a result, the logo of David Friedland was chosen (Fig. 1.4). In its version, the original globe was devoid of colors, and the multilingual text was replaced by separate written symbols, each of which symbolized the language to which it belongs. Symbols, according to an article in The New York Times . 4] , were selected mainly so that the sounds indicated by them were close to the sound transmitted by the letter W [2] . Both Friedland and Stansifer transferred the logo copyrights to the Wikimedia Foundation . After correcting some shortcomings of this option (Fig. 1.5), it was placed as an official logo.

Modern logo

However, the Friedland logo contained errors and inaccuracies in symbol images. Thus, the symbols of some scripts, for example, Katakans and Devanagari , lost their meaning [2] . At the end of 2009, the Wikimedia Foundation made an attempt to correct the flaws of the logo, including its poor scalability. The updated logo no longer used the Klingon letter   , denoting the sound " R " (the Wikipedia section in this language has not existed since 2005), replaced by the Ethiopian alphabet symbol " ው ", and the font of the signature was changed from to free Linux Libertine and lost the italic style [3] . At the same time, a special stylized “W” symbol was used in Linux Libertine , which is used in the logo and as a Wikipedia favicon , which was previously made up of two intersecting letters “V”. The logo was posted on Wikipedia in May 2010 [3] .

Logo Views

In 2010, the Wikimedia Foundation also contacted Philip Metschan , a professional 3D animator who collaborated with Industrial Light and Magic and Pixar to create a three-dimensional version of the logo. Thus, the logo, which existed before only in two-dimensional projection, could be viewed from all angles. This made it possible to place more language symbols on it.

On May 11, 2013, the Russian section of Wikipedia crossed a significant milestone of 1,000,000 articles. To mark this event, a festive "millionth" logo was placed on Wikipedia pages during the week, which was chosen by Wikipedia participants during the competition. The Millionth logo was also used in the Wikipedia press release , Wikinews issues, and commemorative badges.

Wikibol

At the Wikimania International Conference in Taipei ( Taiwan , Republic of China ) in 2007, Wikibol, a three-dimensional human-height Wikipedia puzzle made of puzzles made by Wikimedia Taiwan, was introduced. Among the conference participants was distributed a smaller Wikibol souvenir - a 7.5-cm 3D puzzle that participants could assemble. In places of letters that are not visible on the two-dimensional logo, logos of Wikipedia's related projects, information about Wikimania-2007 and Wikimania's sponsors were placed.
