The total fund of the museum includes more than 26 thousand units of storage of the main fund and more than 6 thousand units of storage of the auxiliary fund. Each year, museum collections are replenished with new exhibits - these are collections of documents, photographs and negatives, fabrics, metal, a collection of paintings, graphics, sculptures and arts and crafts, a collection of household items and ethnography, a collection of numismatics, archeology.

The main objectives of the museum are to identify, study, preserve and popularize the historical and cultural heritage of the city of Kotlas.

The history of the museum begins in 1964, when, on the initiative of V.F. In 1968, the museum was awarded the title of People's Museum.

In 1977, another public museum was created - the regional historical and local lore museum, which settled in the building of the leshoz on Lenin Street. VD Trubin was appointed Chairman of the Museum Council.

On March 1, 1978, these two public museums (the city historical and revolutionary museum and the regional historical and local history museum) merged: the Kotlas historical and revolutionary museum, a branch of the Arkhangelsk regional local history museum, began its work. The building of the People’s House, built in 1906, was allocated for the needs of the museum. Now this building is an object of cultural heritage of regional importance.

September 10, 1982, the grand opening of the museum "Kotlas and the area from ancient times to the present."

In 1990, the Kotlas Historical and Revolutionary Museum became an independent museum of local lore and was included in the state network of museums in Russia.

Mine cart. Discovered in 1968 on the Shidrovka River (Rochegda). Used by English interventionists during the civil war in the North to drop mines into the Northern Dvina. Received March 26, 1985 by V.I. Zhukova
