History

Inscription of the Gilek Mosque

The inscription from the mosque in 1936 was found by A. A. Aleskerzade over the spring of the biliz of the Gilek mosque ... A three-term inscription, cut in outline ... was read in the following order:

Built this high mosque al-Haji Celebi, Sultan b. Kurban is the ruler of Sheki, Amir Shirvan in the blessed month of Allah, Ramadan, 1162 .

The inscription is Arabic-Turkish-speaking, relief, handwriting - a beautiful naskh with elements of suls:

He built this glorious mosque, which was laid on the basis of an old mosque for people to perform ablution and prayer, saying: Glory be to Allah and blessings be upon His power. Al-Hajj Shams ad-Din Beck b. al-Hajj Abd al-Rahman and completed in the month of Rajab 1220 [1]

Architecture

The Gileili minaret, together with a dilapidated mosque, is located in the Kulekhlinsky quarter of Sheki, at an altitude of 20-23 meters from the banks of the Gurdzhan River, at a distance of 8-10 meters from the cliff. On four sides it is surrounded by a stone fence, two meters high. At present, the minaret is taken under state protection as a historical and architectural monument. This is the first and highest minaret in the region of Sheki - Zagatala zone of Azerbaijan. [2]

From west to east along the northern side of the fence, extends the remaining part of the mosque wall, 27 meters long. On the south side of the fence, on a small tower, stands a minaret, which is completely built of burnt brick. The height of the minaret without a tower is 13.5 meters. Tapering as it rises, the minaret is decorated with brickwork with embossed patterns. The minaret is completed by a balcony with a dome covered with iron sheets. In the wide courtyard, between the mosque and the minaret, there is a pool, in the form of a geometric figure, two meters deep. Water is supplied to the pool using clay pipes from the Gurjan River. [3]

Name Etymology

On the official website of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the minaret is held under the name “Minaret of the Gileili Mosque”. [four]
