The temple of Sri Viramakaliamman is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali , the cruel incarnation of Shakti and the wife of the god Shiva , Parvati . Kali has always been highly revered in Bengal , where the people who built this temple in 1881 were born.
In the temple there is a statue of the goddess Kali with many arms and legs, and in each she holds a military weapon. In the main altar there is a black statue of Kali with sons on both sides - the elephant-headed Ganesha and Skanda , the baby god on horseback on a peacock. On Tuesdays and Fridays (holy days), the temple is especially crowded.
The temple was built in the South Indian Tamil style, prevalent in Tamil Nadu , not being like temples dedicated to Kali and located in the north-east of India, in Bengal, in the area where its cult is especially popular.
