Atrium Orchad is a shopping and office center near the Dhobi Gaut station.
The Dhobi Gaut district derives its name from the word dhobi , which refers to the Indian caste of male laundresses. Dhobi washed clothes in a nearby stream and hung up to dry where the YMCA building is now located. In the same place during World War II there were barracks in which the Japanese occupiers kept prisoners.
Behind the YMCA is the white Presbyterian Church, founded by Scottish settlers in 1877 . During World War II, it housed a grocery warehouse for Japanese civilians.
