The series was broadcast on ABC in the 2013–2014 season [2] [3] [4] and aired at ten pm Tuesday after the Goldberg sitcom [5] from September 24, 2013 [6] to May 13, 2014. A few weeks before the premiere, ABC posted on the Internet the full version of the pilot episode for online viewing [7] . The series from the start has received praise from critics, but was not successful in the ratings. On May 8, 2014, the channel closed the series after one season [8] .

Production

In September 2012, ABC bought a script for a pilot episode written by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, and immediately gave the green light to shoot a pilot episode outside the official pilot production cycle [9] . The project was originally developed for the 2012–2013 season, but was never implemented due to a failure to find the actress for the lead role [9] .

Casting for central roles began shortly after ordering the pilot. On September 13, it was announced that Malin Akerman was in talks with the studio to play a major role in the pilot [10] . On September 25, it was confirmed that Akerman signed up to participate in the pilot and the project immediately went into production [11] . Jason Moore soon became director of the pilot episode [12] , and Emmy winner Bradley Whitford signed up to play a leading male role [13] . Oscar winner Marsha Gay Harden, meanwhile, was negotiating to take part in the pilot as Whitford's character first wife of power [14] , and Michaela Watkins got the role of second wife [15] . In November, Natalie Morales joined the pilot in the role of the best friend of the heroine Ackerman [16] [17] .

May 10, 2013 ABC gave the pilot a green light and ordered the shooting of the series for broadcast in the 2013-14 season [2] .

During further production, Gianna Leper was fired, and the rising young actress Bailey Madison replaced her in the role of Hillary, a fiery teenager and daughter of Bradley Whitford [18] . On November 1, 2013, the channel extended the series for a full season of twenty-two episodes [19] .
