The name of the street was due to the fact that it was built during the time of the first British governor Farquhar and was located at Government Hill (now known as Fort Canning ). Hill Street has a number of important Singapore attractions:

  • Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator (Armenian Church),
  • The central fire station , built in 1906 and stands out sharply with its architecture of Edwardian England,
  • Hill Street Building - a 6-story building, erected in 1934 on the site of the first Singapore prison, and until 1980 served as a police station. Later, the building was occupied by other government agencies, including the Ministry of Information and Arts.
  • Singapore's No. 47 Chamber of Commerce , China , was built in 1964 . It is crowned with a pagoda-shaped roof, and 9 porcelain dragons adorn the front wall.

The Chinese call the street in two ways: He Ke Soa Kha (“the foot of the governor’s mountain”) because of the governor’s residence previously located on Government Hill, or Tiau Kio Fau (“at the end of the suspension bridge ”).
