History
This banknote belongs to the “Black” series of banknotes, the issue of which began in 1800.
In 1847, it was decided to create a banknote with a new face value of 200 francs. Artists: Maurice Duke and Paul Delaroche developed a design that included allegories and an oval-shaped drawing of a banknote. Engraving was entrusted to Etienne Hayot.
Printing was carried out in black with the same two-sided printing. Watermark "200 Fr Banque de France".
As part of the Black series, banknotes of 500 francs of 1817 and 1,000 francs of 1817 were previously issued.
The banknote of two hundred francs, Black, was published on June 23, 1848, and was withdrawn from circulation on December 24, 1885. The banknote was stripped of legal tender status in December 1897.
Special Edition
Prior to the serial production of the banknote, a draft version was issued in small print runs in September 1847. This type of banknote resembled 500 francs in 1817 and was developed by artist Charles Persier and engraver Jean-Bertrand Andrieux. Banknotes were printed from October 28, 1847 to 1849.
